Gloria-Style Torrejas

Torrejas are a Spanish treat traditionally prepared during the Lent season and now you can bring them home to pamper your family with their delish flavor! Prepared by soaking stale bread in milk and egg and fried until crispy and golden brown, these Gloria-style torrejas are a succulent dessert that you cannot miss!

  • 4 bolillo rolls
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 jar maple syrup
  • 1 jar honey
  • some vegetable oil

  • Cut 2-day-stale bolillo rolls or sandwich bread into 0.7 or 1.1-inch wide slices.
  • In a bowl, whisk egg whites to stiff peaks. Add egg yolks. Dip each bolillo roll slice into the egg mixture until soaked through.
  • In a skillet, heat oil and fry bolillo roll slices until evenly golden brown and cooked through.
  • Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  • Serve Gloria-style torrejas on a platter drizzled with honey and maple syrup.
