Rainbow Tie-Dye Surprise Cake

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 5 egg whites
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup cow's milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 1 cup vegetable shortening
  • 3/4 cups icing sugar
  • 1 kilo fondant
  • some red food coloring
  • some green food coloring
  • some blue food coloring
  • some yellow food coloring

  • Preheat oven to 356 º F.
  • In a bowl, whisk egg whites to the consistency of firm snow peaks or until tripled in volume. Add half a cup of sugar, cream of tartar, and salt. Using a sieve, sift flour and remaining sugar and fold.
  • Divide previous mixture into 4 bowls and add a different food coloring to each one.
  • Place each portion in a piping bag and set aside.
  • On a parchment paper-lined baking sheet pipe lines of the previous mixtures alternating the colors to resemble a rainbow. Bake for 8 minutes and let cool.
  • Using a cookie cutter, cut rainbow sponge cake into the shape of your choice and set aside.
  • For the pound cake: In a bowl, mix butter, vegetable shortening, sugar, egg whites little by little, flour, salt, baking powder, vanilla essence, and milk until completely incorporated.
  • Pour a bit of batter into a previously greased and floured pound cake pan. Arrange a row of the previously cut rainbow shapes in the middle of the pound cake pan.
  • Pour remaining batter into the pound cake pan until full and until the rainbow shapes are completely covered. Bake for 45 minutes and let cool.
  • For the frosting: In a bowl, mix vegetable shortening and icing sugar until completely incorporated.
  • Using a silicone spatula spread frosting all over the pound cake. Set aside.
  • Divide fondant into 4 portions and add red food coloring to the first one, blue food coloring to the second, green food coloring to the third, and yellow food coloring to the fourth.
  • Roll fondant into strips, place them together and roll once more to mix the colors.
  • Roll out fondant to 0.1-inch thickness. Cover pound cake and remove excess fondant with a knife. Garnish rainbow tie-dye surprise cake with birthday candles.
