  • For the dough: In a mixer, mix flour and yeast. Add sugar, salt, butter, egg, and vanilla and mix at medium speed. Add water little by little while mixing until an elastic and smooth dough is obtained.
  • Grease a small baking sheet. Remove dough from mixer and place it on the baking sheet. Let rest for about 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
  • Sprinkle a bit of flour on a flat surface and roll out the dough to 1.9-inch thickness. Using a 3.9-inch donut cutter, cut the dough into circles. Cut out 0.7-inch donut holes.
  • Flour a baking sheet and arrange donuts. Let rise for 15 to 20 minutes at room temperature.
  • In a deep skillet over medium heat, melt vegetable shortening and fry donuts on both sides. Remove and let cool.
  • Cut chocolate into chunks and place them in a bowl. Microwave chocolate chunks in 15-second intervals until melted.
  • For sugar donuts: In a bowl, place sugar and coat traditional donuts.
  • For chocolate donuts: Remove melted chocolate from the microwave, mix, and dip traditional donuts.
