Doll-Shaped Mexican Pan de Muerto

Pan de muerto or Mexican Day of the Dead bread, is a traditional bread that is an essential part of altars to celebrate Día de Muertos. This pan de muerto recipe is a great way to include kids in Day of the Dead celebrations as they can help shape the bread like dolls that can be either included in the altar or served with coffee on the side.

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cups butter
  • 5 grams yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cups cow's milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 egg yolk, for glazing

  • Combine flour, butter, yeast, salt, sugar, milk, and eggs in a mixer and mix until a homogenous dough is obtained. Add orange zest and mix until incorporated. Let rest 15 minutes to rise.
  • On a floured table, make rolls. Using your hands make bunnies: Press, cut the bottom part for the legs, and the sides for the hands, to make the dolls.
  • Place on a tray. Brush with yolk and bake for 20 minutes at 356 °F.
  • Serve doll-shaped Mexican pan de muerto with coffee on the side.
