Venezuelan Tequeños

Venezuelan tequeños are a traditional snack that is impossible to resist! Born in Los Teques, these drool-worthy cheese sticks are usually served as afternoon snacks at parties. Deep-fried Gouda cheese wrapped with dough in a characteristic spiral fashion gives this Venezuelan appetizer a tasty flavor that is impossible to match!

  • 2 1/2 cups flour, for the dough
  • 1 tablespoon salt, for the dough
  • 1 egg, for the dough
  • 1/4 cups butter, for the dough
  • 1/4 cups water, for the dough
  • 250 grams Gouda cheese
  • some vegetable oil, for frying

  • In a bowl, mix all the ingredients for the dough. Knead until a soft and homogeneous consistency is obtained. In another bowl, place dough and cover with plastic wrap. Let rise for 15 minutes.
  • On a chopping board, cut Gouda cheese into 0.3 x 1.9-inch stripes. Set aside.
  • On a floured surface, roll out dough to an 11.8-inch long rectangle about 0.1-inch thick. Cut dough rectangle into 0.7-inch wide strips. Set aside.
  • Wrap Gouda cheese with dough strips as shown in the video. Set aside.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, fry Venezuelan tequeños for 4 minutes. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil.
  • Serve Venezuelan tequeños with garlic dressing.
