Chocolate Cereal Skulls

Sugar skulls, or calaveras de azúcar, are traditional sweets and ornaments that are one of the main elements in Mexican Day of the Dead altars. Usually made of sugar, this recipe is prepared with cereal and chocolate. Easy, fun, and delicious, these chocolate cereal skulls are a great way to celebrate Día de Muertos!

  • 2 cups icing sugar
  • 3 tablespoons lime juice
  • food coloring, blue, pink, yellow, purple, etc.
  • 1 1/2 cups dark chocolate
  • 1 1/2 cups white chocolate
  • 4 cups corn flakes
  • some colorful sugar
  • some organic cempasúchil flower, petals

  • In a container, mix icing sugar with lime juice. Divide mixture and place it in resealable bags and add a different food coloring to each. Close and rub with your hands to mix. The color can be as intense as desired so the amount of food coloring is up to you. Set aside.
  • Melt dark and white chocolate.
  • Add melted dark chocolate to half of the cereal. Mix until completely covered. Repeat with white chocolate and the other half of cereal. Set aside. Spread a bit of oil on your hands and place a large spoonful of cereal on them.
  • Shape the skull with your hands handling cereal as needed. Refrigerate.
  • Once cold, adjust the shape of the skill with a thick stick.
  • Garnish chocolate cereal skill with icing of different colors, petals of cempasúchil flower, and colored sugar.
